World-Class Short Coastal Hike and Accommodation!

We are passionate about showcasing Victoria’s beautiful coastline and delivering experiences that will stay with you for a lifetime. Enjoy untouched beaches, surprising natural beauty and great diversity, all within three hours of Melbourne. Our walks are well organised, great value for money and delivered to excellent quality and environmental standards - as you would expect from a luxury lodge based walk.

Our guided 4 Day 3 Night Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk covers approximately 46.5km of the 104km trail known as the Great Ocean Walk. We are a licensed eco-accredited tour operator with local staff on call all day, every day to support you out on the trail. Our expert people have incredible local knowledge to share with you in authentic exchanges ensuring your enjoyment of this genuine adventure with a responsible tourism operator. The Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk makes your journey one worth walking for.

Formerly known as bothfeet, Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk has been continuously operating on the Great Ocean Walk since 2005, just before the trail officially opened. In 2008 we built our own walking lodge with the vision of offering the best hiking facilities available with strong environmental credentials. The Lodge has been custom built to support hikers on this world class trail and its midpoint location gives you a superior stay throughout your hike. We operate all aspects of our walks: our lodge, vehicles, food, equipment and staff provide a level of quality control that defines us. We are managed by The Australian Walking Company and we also hold the title of being one of “The Great Walks of Australia”.

Choosing a guided walk makes your walk more enjoyable and gives you peace of mind when in the bush. Remote first aid trained, your guide fine tunes the itinerary to suit walker abilities and daily conditions, and carries a satellite phone, EPIRB emergency beacon and extra water.

It’s reassuring to know our emergency back-up is on standby at all times.

Healthy and nutritious meals, transfers that meet you with a cool drink, a stunning eco-lodge and great gear provide off the trail highlights. Whether it’s face towels, walking poles or energy snacks, we have everything on hand to make sure you make it through every last kilometre.

On a Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk guided journey, you will share company on the trail and at the lodge with a minimum of four and a maximum of ten other like-minded travellers; starting as walkers, ending as friends.

Our departures are confirmed to start 60 days prior if minimum numbers (4 guests) have been met.

You will then collect your scrumptious hiker lunch and then it’s a 10 minute transfer to Castle Cove to start your walk. Leaving the Great Ocean Road behind us, the afternoon begins amongst tea-tree with regular cliff top ocean vistas before entering an enchanting grass tree forest. Soon after, drop down onto Johanna Beach for two kilometres of soft sand walking with the ocean only metres from your feet. A great opportunity to take off your boots and enjoy barefoot, just don’t turn your back to the unpredictable waves! Cross Johanna River (may need to take boots off) and make your way to the end of the beach.

Day 2: MIlanesia Track to Moonlight Head

PLEASE NOTE THAT DISTANCES MAY VARY ON TRACKING DEVICES

A 30 minute drive to start the most challenging day on the trail, you will be rewarded with the most visually spectacular and isolated sections of the Great Ocean Walk – ‘the wild side’. Take a winding path that leads from Milanesia Track down through the forest to beautiful Milanesia Beach. After a gentle beach stroll, we turn upwards for a short, but steep climb that sets the tone for the trail ahead. The trail is dissected by gullies before a gradual climb, which delivers fabulous views back over Milanesia. Rough tree ferns and stands of remnant Eucalypts dot the path before an ascent of 138 steps.

The trail continues in a westerly direction until a steady climb leads us out of the forest and into Ryans Den campsite. Be rewarded with superb views of the coast to both Cape Volney and Cape Otway; an ideal place to reflect on your journey so far. The walk from here rises and falls many times as it parallels the coastline before cutting along the ridge behind Cape Volney, providing breathtaking views, this time to the west. A final seated look out provides a magnificent vantage point, only 100 metres from today’s endpoint.

Day 3: Moonlight Head to Princetown

  • Lodge Departure Time: 7:30AM
  • Ascent: 267m (377m)
  • Descent: 388m (537m)
PLEASE NOTE THAT DISTANCES MAY VARY ON TRACKING DEVICES

It’s a 30 minute transfer back to Moonlight Head. The first four and half Kilometres gently meander through native stringybark forest providing a contrast to the coast, concluding with a rise to the Gables, one of mainland Australia’s highest cliff top lookouts. Tide dependent, you will descend onto Wreck Beach and continue through to a lovely lunch spot past Devil’s Kitchen overlooking the Apostles in the distance. Wilder days will give an insight into the cauldron-like ocean at this part of the coast. A high tide option combines coastal scrub with forest and walks through Devil’s Kitchen campsite.

Stunning coastal views to the west this afternoon provide the incentive to keep moving forward. The topography and geology change from sandstone to limestone and its associated coastal flora. This afternoon is gentle walking that finishes at the Gellibrand River, nearby the sleepy hamlet of Princetown, a chance for a swim if weather permits (warmer months). Your assist guide will meet you at the river and transfer you back to Twelve Apostles walking lodge for a well-deserved dinner and a relaxing final evening.

Day 4: Princetown to the Twelve Apostles

  • Walk: PRINCETOWN (-38.697078, 143.154697) TO TWELVE APOSTLES (-38.660986, 143.105421)

  • Rating: Easy
  • Lodge Departure Time: 7:30AM
  • Ascent: 218m

Twelve Apostles Walk

In 2004, the Great Ocean Walk opened connecting 104 km of walking trails that follow the coastline near the Great Ocean Road, stretching from Apollo Bay to the 12 Apostles.

The Great Ocean Road

This road is an Australian National Heritage listed 243-kilometre (151 mi) stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia and is the world's largest war memorial, dedicated to casualties of World War I. It is an important tourist attraction in the region, which winds through varying terrain alongside the coast, and provides access to several prominent landmarks including the nationally significant Twelve Apostles limestone stack formations.

In 1962, the road was deemed by the Tourist Development Authority to be one of the world's great scenic roads

In 2011, the road was added to the Australian National Heritage List.

Flora and Fauna

On the edges of the bush eastern grey kangaroos and red-shouldered wallabies as the sun goes down and in the wetlands near the coast waders and water birds aplenty

Black swan, purple swamp hen and mountain duck are found here and also the tiger snake, a slow-moving snake.

The Otways once an island, has rich soils and high rainfall that have combined to display some of the most impressive forest in Australia. Mountain ash and numerous leafy fern gullies dot the area. Woodlands of eucalyptus contain koalas and in the trees crimson rosellas are prevalent.

In the forest depths the call of the yellow-tailed black cockatoo can be heard, and black wallabies abound.

Where it is higher and cooler the endemic (carnivorous) Otway Black Snail is found.
