Twelve Apostles Walk

World-Class Short Coastal Hike, World-Class
Accommodation!

.
The Twelve Apostles Walk is the perfect short holiday. Walking is moderate to challenging — discuss options with your expert guide.

See Johanna Beach's excellent surf, Moonlight Head with its views, and the high cliffs of The Gables.

Visit beautiful but treacherous Wreck Beach in safety, and of course: the Twelve Apostles.

Day 1: Castle Cove to Johanna Beach

Ease yourself into the tour with this, one of the shorter, yet more diverse days.

After a morning tea and briefing at the lodge, we head out to Castle Cove to start the walk among tea-tree and grass tree forests, with regular cliff top open vistas.

Your walking today involves crossing the Johanna River by the wildly beautiful surf beach, Johanna Beach. After this the choice is yours-stroll the last 3km back to the lodge or make use of road transport to take you back to the lodge for a foot spa and a cold drink.

Day 2: Johanna Beach to Moonlight Head

Today you'll start on farmland trails near Johanna Beach if your preference is to do a longer walk, or from Milanesia Gate for the shorter walk option. From Milanesia Beach a short but steep climb to the ridge top sets the tone for the trail ahead.

We'll follow the hillside trail, about 50 m above sea level, and climb 138 steps. Then, it's west to another hill climb, which leads us to a forest clearing with amazing views of the coast to both Cape Otway and Cape Volney.

The walk from here rises and falls many times before a final lookout provides a magnificent vantage point only 100 metres from today's endpoint.

Day 3: Moonlight Head Road or Gables to Princetown

Today you'll enjoy increasingly magnificent Southern Ocean views, particularly from the Gables Lookout, one of Australia's highest seaside cliffs.

If tides permit, we'll visit Wreck Beach and you'll see rusty anchors from two of the many historic shipwrecks that give this wild and beautiful beach its name. You then continue on to a lovely lunch spot past Devil's Kitchen overlooking the Apostles in the distance.

The high tide option takes in coastal scrub and forest walks and passes through Devil's Kitchen campsite. Then, a comparatively easy afternoon's walk will take you along the coast to Princetown.

Day 4: Princetown to the Twelve Apostles

Today, our final stretch. The track from Princetown leads us over wetland, through reeds and rushes. Then, over a ridge, the tall rocky sea-stacks of the 12 Apostles come into view for the first time.

The furthest peak offers an amazing secluded and private viewing spot, far from other sightseers. Our final stop: the 12 Apostles visitor centre. To complete your 12 Apostles experience , you now take to the air with a stunning scenic helicopter flight for an unparalleled view of this amazing coastline.

It's time to head home and we'll take you on the 3.5 hour drive to the nearest large city: Melbourne. You'll leave with lasting memories of one of the world's most famous coastal walking tracks.

Twelve Apostles Walk

In 2004, the Great Ocean Walk opened connecting 104 km of walking trails that follow the coastline near the Great Ocean Road, stretching from Apollo Bay to the 12 Apostles.

The Great Ocean Road

This road is an Australian National Heritage listed 243-kilometre (151 mi) stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia and is the world's largest war memorial, dedicated to casualties of World War I. It is an important tourist attraction in the region, which winds through varying terrain alongside the coast, and provides access to several prominent landmarks including the nationally significant Twelve Apostles limestone stack formations.

In 1962, the road was deemed by the Tourist Development Authority to be one of the world's great scenic roads

In 2011, the road was added to the Australian National Heritage List.

Flora and Fauna

On the edges of the bush eastern grey kangaroos and red-shouldered wallabies as the sun goes down and in the wetlands near the coast waders and water birds aplenty

Black swan, purple swamp hen and mountain duck are found here and also the tiger snake, a slow-moving snake.

The Otways once an island, has rich soils and high rainfall that have combined to display some of the most impressive forest in Australia. Mountain ash and numerous leafy fern gullies dot the area. Woodlands of eucalyptus contain koalas and in the trees crimson rosellas are prevalent.

In the forest depths the call of the yellow-tailed black cockatoo can be heard, and black wallabies abound.

Where it is higher and cooler the endemic (carnivorous) Otway Black Snail is found.
