What is included in my walk package?
Your tour package includes three nights of high quality lodge accommodation, all meals, your luggage transported, entry to attractions, and all your transport from Christchurch to Punakaiki during your four day West Coast experience. Your booking with us covers all your needs from the morning of Day One through to the conclusion of the tour at 12 noon on the fourth day. Any alcohol consumed is at your own expense.

What do I need to bring with me?

  • Hiking boots or off-road shoes
  • Woollen socks for three days walking
  • Shorts or longs – quick drying
  • Thermal long johns and top
  • Waterproof jacket with hood
  • Polar fleece or woollen jumper
  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Hat, sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Medium size daypack
  • Drink bottle – at least one litre capacity
  • Swimwear
  • Camera
  • Small personal first aid kit
  • Casual attire for the evenings
  • Any other personal items

 

What level of fitness is required to do the walk? The walk requires a moderate level of fitness in order to gain maximum enjoyment. We recommend that you do some walks prior to coming on the walk.

Where does the walk commence from?
The walk commences from our central Christchurch office at 24 New Regent Street. This is a short twenty minute drive from Christchurch International Airport and within easy walking distance from most of Christchurch’s main hotels.

What sort of accommodation and food can I expect?The accommodation is high quality lodge accommodation on a double or twin share basis. You will enjoy great local cuisine at night.

What are the guides like?
Our guides are experienced, friendly hikers who love to share their knowledge on the spectacular flora and fauna and local history. They all hold current first aid certificates and are the very best people to ensure your experience on the West Coast Trail will be one to remember.

What do I carry while walking and what happens with the rest of my luggage?
Your luggage will be transported for you each day to your accommodation that night. All you need to carry while walking is your daypack with your lunch, clothing requirements for the day, camera and incidentals.

Do I really need thermals and a fleece, even in summer?
As some of the tracks are in open country and can be exposed, we recommend that you be prepared for all weather conditions.

How many people are in each group?
Tuatara Tours take a maximum of twelve people on each walking tour. We feel this gives you the best opportunity to gain as much from your West Coast Trail experience as possible. We are happy to discuss options for groups of more than twelve with you.

I want to come on my own, is this okay?
Yes you certainly can. Please note that there is a single supplement fee if you request single room accommodation.

Do you have a risk management plan?
The company has a Safety Management plan which has been checked and approved by a qualified and independent auditor. Also all our guides have current first aid qualifications.

When and where does the tour finish?
The tour takes you from Christchurch to Punakaiki over four days, finishing up at 12 noon on the fourth day in Punakaiki.

At the conclusion of our tour there are several options available to you.

  • Return to Christchurch via TranzAlpine Railway or Coach
  • If you wish to continue your stay in the West Coast region or explore another area of New Zealand there are hire car facilities in nearby Greymouth.
