What is included in my walk package?
Your tour package includes three nights of good quality accommodation, all meals,
your luggage transported, and all your transport from Hokitika return.
Any alcohol consumed is at your own expense.
What do I need to bring with me?
Compulsory
- Footwear with good ankle support – we recommend good hiking boots
- Thermal top wool or polypro
- Thermal bottom wool or polypro or long trousers
- Waterproof parka with hood
- Waterproof overtrousers
- Fleece jacket or woollen jersey
- Woollen or fleece hat
- Gloves
- Medium size day pack
- Woollen socks for four days walking
- Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
- Drink bottle – at least one litre capacity (we supply you with one bottle, but you may wish to bring another)
- Swim wear
- Camera
- Small personal first aid kit including blister block or similar
- Casual attire for the evenings
- Any other personal items
What level of fitness is required to do the walk?
The walk requires a moderate level of fitness in order to gain maximum enjoyment.
Where does the tour commence from?
Your tour commences at 9am from outside Westland Greenstone Limited, 34 Tancred St, Hokitika. We are able to offer courtesy transport to Hokitika the day before the tour commences.
What sort of accommodation and food can I expect?
Motel accommodation is provided on a double or twin share basis. You will enjoy great local cuisine at night.
What are the guides like?
Our guides are experienced, friendly hikers who love to share their knowledge on the spectacular flora and fauna and local history. They all hold current first aid certificates and are the very best people to ensure your experience will be one to remember.
What do I carry while walking and what happens with the rest of my luggage?
Your luggage will be transported to your accommodation. All you need to carry while walking is your day pack with your lunch, drink bottle, clothing requirements for the day, camera and any incidentals.
Do I really need thermals and a fleece, even in summer?
As some of the walking tracks can be exposed, we recommend that you be prepared for all weather conditions.
How many people are in each group?
Tuatara Tours take a maximum of twelve people on each walking tour. We feel this gives you the best opportunity to gain as much from your walking experience as possible. We are happy to discuss options for groups of more than twelve with you.
Can I come on my own?
Yes, you certainly can. Please note that there is a single supplement fee of NZ$250 if you would like single room accommodation.
Do you have a risk management plan?
The company has a Safety Management Plan which has been checked and approved by a qualified and independent auditor. Also all our guides have current first aid qualifications.
When and where does the tour finish?
The tour finishes in Hokitika at approximately 1pm. We are able to offer courtesy transport back to Christchurch on the last day of the tour.
