What is included in my cycle package?
Your cycle package will include three night's accommodation, all meals, your luggage transported for you, a guide, vehicle and bike repair support, all transportation and lots of local sightseeing.

Can I bring my own bike and helmet?
Yes, you can bring your own helmet or bike and helmet if you wish to. Bike hire is available at an extra cost. The hire mountain bikes we offer are modern high quality bikes that are well maintained.

What do I need to bring with me?
Compulsory

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Thermal top - wool or polypro
  • Thermal bottom - wool or polypro
  • Waterproof parka with hood
  • Waterproof overtrousers
  • Fleece jacket or woollen jersey
  • Woollen or fleece hat
  • Gloves
  • Medium size day pack

Highly recommended but not compulsory

  • Cycle shorts
  • Woollen socks
  • Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
  • Drink bottle - at least one litre capacity (we supply you with one bottle, but you may wish to bring another)
  • Swimwear
  • Camera
  • Small personal first aid kit including blister block or similar
  • Casual attire for the evenings
  • Any other personal items

What level of fitness is required to do the cycle?
The cycle trail requires a moderate level of fitness in order to gain maximum enjoyment. It is not technical in any way so it is suitable for healthy individuals of any age. Each day you will have the opportunity to cycle approximately 50kms (more or less if you prefer) at a pace you are comfortable with. There will be plenty of stops along the way for photos, snacks and enjoying the views. The support vehicle will accompany you if you want a break.

Where does the Hanmer Cycle Trail start from?
The cycle trail departs from our central Christchurch office at 24 New Regent Street. This is a short twenty minute drive from Christchurch's International Airport and within easy walking distance from most of Christchurch's main hotels.

What sort of accommodation and food can I expect?
The accommodation is of good quality and is on a double or twin share basis. You will enjoy restaurant quality evening meals.

What are the guides like?
The guides are experienced and friendly. They love to share their knowledge of the area’s local history and New Zealand's flora and fauna. They all hold current first aid certificates and are the very best people to ensure your experience on the Hanmer Cycle Trail will be one to remember.

What do I carry while cycling and what happens to the rest of my luggage?
Your luggage will be transported for you each day to your accommodation that night. You will need to have a small day pack which you can leave in the van each day that will contain your lunch, clothing requirements and any incidentals. All you will need to carry with you is your water and a camera.

What if I don't feel like cycling one of the days?
No problem, each day's cycling is very flexible and you can make use of the support vehicle whenever you choose to.

How many people are in each group?
Tuatara Tours takes a maximum of twelve people on each cycling tour. We feel this gives you the best opportunity to gain as much as possible from your experience. We are happy to discuss options with you for groups of more than twelve.

Can I come on my own?
Yes, you certainly can. Please note that there is a single supplement fee if you would like single room accommodation.

Do you have a risk management plan?
All our guides have first aid qualifications and the company has a Safety Management Plan which has been checked and approved by a qualified and independent auditor.

When and where does the tour finish?
Your bike tour finishes back in Christchurch at approximately 5pm.

How can I book?
Bookings are essential and are easy to make either online via our secure website, or by contacting us during normal business hours, either by phone or email.
